    ATHLETES IN ACTION ANNOUNCES PROGRAM FOR 2017 SUPER BOWL BREAKFAST

    Marriott Marquis Houston – 1777 Walker (77010) –   8:00 – 10:00 a.m.  

    Houston – November 3, 2016 Athletes in Action (AIA) officially announced its 2017 Super Bowl Breakfast program today, which will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2017 in Houston, Texas. Now in its 30th year, the NFL-sanctioned event is projected to attract nearly 2,000 business executives.

    “We have an exciting program planned for Houston, including some very notable speakers and special guests,” said Terry Bortz, AIA Special Projects Director.

    According to Bortz, James Brown, host of “The NFL Today” and Thursday Night Football will emcee the event. Super Bowl Champions Tony Dungy and Roger Staubach, will also attend the breakfast among other special guests like Bruce Matthews, Anthony Munoz, Derrick Brooks.

    Attendees will hear narratives of faith and football from NFL players past and present, as well as witness the presentation of the 2017 The Bart Starr Award. The Bart Starr Award is given annually to a player who represents exemplary character and leadership on and off the field.

    The winner of the Bart Starr Award is determined by NFL-player balloting, making it one of only two individual honors selected by the players themselves. 
 Players will be voting in mid-December and AIA will announce the winner the first week of January. Carolina Panthers Outside Linebacker, Thomas Davis received the 2016 award.

    San Francisco, CA (Jan. 6, 2016) – Carolina Panthers Outside Linebacker, Thomas Davis has been chosen by his National Football League (NFL) peers to receive one of the sport’s most prestigious honors, The Bart Starr Award, given annually to a player who exemplifies character and leadership on and off the field.

    Davis will receive the Bart Starr Award in person at what is widely considered one of Super Bowl weekend’s premier events, the Athletes in Action Super Bowl Breakfast. Through this honor, Davis will join the list of Bart Starr Award winners that includes Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Brent Jones, Kurt Warner, Aeneas Williams, Jason Witten, London Fletcher and Trent Dilfer.

    “It means a lot to win the Bart Starr award, and hearing that I won it from Mrs. [Cherry] Starr was exciting,” Davis said. “To be recognized for an award that is voted on by my fellow players and carries Mr. Starr’s name speaks volumes. I’m truly honored to be selected.” 

    The Thomas Davis Defending Dreams Foundation is built on the principles of “Educate, Empower, Defend” and strives to encourage students to develop the essential life and social skills that will make them leaders of tomorrow. The Thomas Davis Youth Leadership Academy (TDYLA) equips middle school age youth with the practical skills needed to become productive, self-fulfilled and achievement-oriented young adults and community leaders. The program involves the whole-child, extended family and the community. It incorporates a school-to-work focus, academic skill development and leadership development. 

    Davis was the recipient of the 2014 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award is given annually by the NFL honoring a player's volunteer and charity work, as well as his excellence on the field.  Davis has played for the Carolina Panthers since 2005.

    While Davis has won the 2016 Bart Starr Award, DeMarcus Ware (Denver Broncos) and Benjamin Watson (New Orleans Saints) were selected by their NFL peers as finalists for the honor, in recognition of their outstanding character and community contributions.

  • Denver Broncos Quarterback Peyton Manning Presented with 2015 Bart Starr Award at 28th Annual NFL-Sanctioned Super Bowl Breakfast

    Phoenix, AZ (Jan. 30, 2015) – Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy reunited with Super Bowl XLI MVP Peyton Manning this morning to present Manning with one of the sport’s most meaningful honors, the Bart Starr Award.

    The Denver Broncos quarterback was chosen by his National Football League (NFL) peers as this year’s winner based on his character and contributions on and off the field. Tony Dungy and Bart Starr Jr., awarded Manning with the Bart Starr Award trophy in front of an audience of 1,900 at what is widely considered one of the game’s premier events, the Super Bowl Breakfast (presented by Athletes in Action and the Super Service Challenge).

    “I’ve always had the greatest admiration for Bart Starr because of his leadership, integrity and success as an NFL quarterback,” said Manning. “He’s a Hall of Fame player and, most importantly, a Hall of Fame person who has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to giving back. To be recognized with this prestigious honor named after Bart and voted on by my peers is very humbling.”

    Manning gives his time, leadership and presence to a broad range of worthy causes. His PeyBack Foundation has provided more than $10 million of impact to at risk youth in Colorado, Indiana, Louisiana and Tennessee through its grants and programs since its inception in 1999.

    NEW YORK (Jan. 16, 2014) – Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was selected by his National Football League peers to receive one of the sport’s most meaningful honors - the Bart Starr Award – given annually to a player who represents exemplary character and leadership on and off the field.

    Athletes in Action will recognize the winner during the NFL-Sanctioned 26th Annual Super Bowl Breakfast

    NEW ORLEANS (Jan. 7, 2013) — Athletes in Action announced today that Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will be honored with the 2013 Bart Starr Award, which recognizes one NFL player for outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community.

    Witten will be honored during the 26th Annual NFL-Sanctioned Super Bowl Breakfast, presented by Companies with a Mission, on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at 8 a.m. CST at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans (601 Loyola Ave.).

    Other finalists for the award were Matt Hasselbeck, quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, and Justin Tuck, defensive end for the New York Giants.

    The morning will include special guests Lewis Johnson, Brent Jones, Danny Wuerffel and other NFL athletes and coaches to be announced.

(January 11, 2012) — Athletes in Action announced today that Washington Redskins middle linebacker London Fletcher will be honored with the 2012 Bart Starr Award, which recognizes one NFL player for outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community.

    Fletcher will be honored during the 25th Annual NFL-Sanctioned Super Bowl Breakfast, presented by Bob and Kathy Andersen and Companies with a Mission, on Saturday February 4, 2012, at 8:00 a.m. ESTat the Exposition Hall of the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis(1202 East 38th Street).

The foundation runs mentoring programs and charitable giving to support health and fitness, education and leadership programs. He has been involved in the Redskins’ Harvest Feast, the “Stuff a Backpack” School Supply Drive, The Children’s Inn and visits to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, among many other projects.
